What is the oldest drink in the world? The answer might be tea. Thousands of years ago, Chinese people made this special drink. Today, it is part of people’s daily lives not only in China, but also in the rest of the world.
In 2019, the United Nations announced May 21 to be International Tea Day. The purpose is to remind people of tea’s value.
The cultural value of tea is in old traditions and daily habits. In China, people use best-quality tea when receiving important guests. British people are well-known for their afternoon tea, while in Russia, the beautiful teapot has become a symbol of Russian culture.
The more people keep drinking tea as a habit and tradition, the more economically (在经济上) important tea becomes. According to Xinhua, China comes first in the world in total tea-planting area and produces the most tea every year. Around 115 million Chinese people work in this rapidly growing industry. In many poor areas, people live on tea industry.
To attract more customers, tea companies are trying to give the old drink a new look. The Chinese tea brand (品牌) Xiao Guan Tea uses fashionable designs to make its tea more attractive. Hey Tea, a Guangdong-based brand that has received lots of clicks online, has won over many young tea drinkers with its special taste. It does seem that a small cup of tea connects everything — farmers and customers, tradition and fashion.
Tea is also of value in keeping people healthy. Tea leaves can help lower the risk of cancer and heart disease. What’s more, tea helps us lose weight and keeps our mind clear. But doctors advise that we should not drink too much tea. Otherwise, we might not fall asleep at night, as tea can make us excited.
