运河)and the Red Sea. Across the Mediterranean(地中海)to the north it faces Europe. It has an area of more than thirty million square kilometres, being the second largest continent in the world, next to Asia.
The Nile(尼罗河)which is 6,450 kilometres in length(长度)is the longest river in theworld. It has two tributaries(支流)in its up reaches,of which one is the White Nile rising on the
East African Plateau, and the other is the Blue Nile rising on the Ethiopian Plateau. The two tributaries join in the Central Egypt into the Mediterranean.
The Sahara Desert, which is one of the largest deserts, divides Africa into two parts. Arabs
(阿拉伯人)live north of the Desert and the black people live south of it. The white people from
Europe, small in number, live mainly in the southern area of Africa. Africa is rich in natural resources(自然资源)such as oil, gold, copper and diamond. It is also famous for its fine cotton.
People there are brave and hard-working. They fought bravely for their independence(独立)and freedom. Now nearly all the African countries have won their independence.
