The first movie studio in the Hollywood area was set up in 1911.BY the time World War Istarted in Europe in 1914,a number of companies had set up studios in and around the Hollywood district of Los Angeles.After World War Iended in 1918,American movies became known all over the world Hollywood is also used to refer to the film and television industry in Southern California.
D.W.Griffith was the most important film director during the early years of Hollywood.He played in many films as an actor before moving behind the canera as a director.Griffith invented many filmmaking techniques,and they became standard in Hollywood.His work made more people interested in films.Lillian Gish called him "the father of film",and Charlie Chaplin called him"the teacher of us all."Though he had invented the art of modern cinema,Griffith spent the lastr fifteen years of his life unable to find work.
