Within the framework of a mineral exploration project
in south-east Cameroon (Central Africa),an airborne geophysical
survey, supported by drilling has identified four
ultramafic bodies in the Lomie´ region (PRMSEC,1987).
These bodies are overlain by a thick lateritic profile
enriched in nickel and cobalt (107 tonnes of ore with
0.1% Co and 0.8% Ni for the southern part of the Kongo
massif). This partial estimate shows the economic potential
of both Ni and Co in this region and has encouraged the
Government of Cameroon to envisage its exploitation.A
number of processing routes to exploit this type of deposit
have been developed during the last decade and choice of
the most suitable process depends on the characteristics
of the laterite profile (Elias,2002).A robust and flexible
process, with more than 90% of the Ni and Co being
extracted, has recently been developed in Guatemala (Valls
et al.,2003).In the Lomie´ region, studies are still at the
reconnaissance level and we present in this paper the characteristics
of the Ni–Co enriched parts of six laterite soil
profiles from the southern part of the Kongo massif, based
on petrographic,mineralogical and chemical analyses.
